Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and the fifth largest city in Japan
in terms of population. The city is best known as host of the 1972
Olympic Winter Games and the city’s name is synonymous with the Sapporo
The city’s name is derived from a word in the language of the Ainu, the
indigenous people of Hokkaido. Possible derivatives include
"Sari-Poro-Pet" (River lined with large reed bed) or "Sat-Poro-Pet"
(Large dried-up river). The city was established in 1922.
