Started in the early 1970’s by legendary Car and Driver editor Brock Yates, the Cannonball Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash was a flat out, no-holds-barred race from New York City to Redondo Beach, California. The race drew a cult subculture following, especially given the main cause of the event: to protest the federally mandated 55 MPH speed limit. And haven’t we all pushed nudged just a wee bit past the legal speed limit? I knew you’d understand.
The race became the stuff of legends, created a legend, and even received several treatments from Hollywood, including one starring David Carradine and a remake starring Burt Reynolds.
The 2008 edition of the CannonBall Run builds upon the tradition set forth from the legendary run, running at legal speeds with daily time trials at designated race tracks along the way. Go to One Lap’s site to get more info on the event’s illustrious, twisting history.
