Europe’s Biggest Software Craftsmanship Conference Sells Out: But You Can Watch It on Ustream

CRAFT CONFERENCE BUDAPEST / APRIL 23-24, 2015

Europe’s biggest software craftsmanship conference, CRAFT, is streaming live on Ustream this Thursday and Friday. The Craft Ustream channel will provide free access to more than 60 presentations from industry-recognized leaders.

The Craft Conference, a non-profit event about software craftsmanship organized by Ustream, Prezi and Ericsson in Budapest, is sold out. Making knowledge accessible for everyone is a core value of the organizers’ mission. More than 60 percent of the 800 attendees will come from outside Hungary. Speakers will discuss which tools, methods, and practices should be part of the toolbox of a modern developer and company. The conference will also cover new technologies, trends and the future of software development. Attendees will learn from the peers, practitioners and leaders in the developer community.

“This year’s topics have been carefully selected to meet modern developers’ demand for knowledge—microservices, functional programming, distributed systems, devops, data infrastructure, concurrency, infrastructure automation and software architecture make up just a selection of the subject matter that will be covered,” said Gergely Hodicska, Ustream VP of engineering and conference organizer. “Ustream’s goal is to make knowledge accessible for all and to show that the Ustream platform is a great innovative tool for anyone with these objectives.”

The speaker line-up is star-studded and includes:

  • Marty Cagan, founder of Silicon Valley Product Group. Before founding Silicon Valley Product group, Marty was the senior vice president of product and design for eBay, where he was responsible for creating and building the product and design organizations, and defining the products and services for the company’s global e-commerce trading site.
  • Mary Poppendieck, consultant, teacher and author. Mary will discuss ‘The New New Software Development Game: Containers, Micro Services and Contract Tests.’ Besides an amazing career as a programmer, Mary also wrote The Lean Mindset: Ask the Right Questions, in A popular writer and speaker, she continues to bring fresh perspectives to the world of software development.
  • Dan North, programmer and organizational change specialist. Dan applies principles from lean operations and agile software development to help organizations align their technology capabilities with their business objectives.
  • Alf Rehn, professor, speaker, consultant, author and currently the Chair of Management and Organization at Åbo Akademi University. Alf has taught worldwide, including at China’s Shangdong Economic University, Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology and the UK’s Manchester Business School. Alf will provide Thursday’s closing keynote “How To Save Innovation From Itself.”

Other noted speakers are from Google, Pivotal, Twitter, PayPal, IBM, Netflix, Atlassian, Fastly, Etsy, Gilt, Red Hat, LinkedIn, Basho, Typesafe and Aerospike.

On Earth Day and Beyond, Businesses Get Greener With Streaming Video

“The greenest business trip is the one you don’t take,” GreenBiz founder and executive director Joel Makower recently noted in a New York Times story.

Businesses around the world are coming to the same conclusion. For these enterprises, shrinking their carbon footprints by reducing travel isn’t just a benevolent idea. It’s good business, helping them to cut costs while also appealing to environmentally conscious consumers.

According to the Air Transport Action Group, a nonprofit association representing all sectors of the air transport industry, flights produced 705 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2013. By replacing in-person meetings with videoconferencing and live events with online streaming video events, businesses can enjoy the benefits of live interaction without adding to the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

For example, if a New York-based business flies employees from its London location to the headquarters for a summit, each round trip flight would generate 1.53 metric tons of CO2 emissions (source: climatecare.org). By turning the event into an interactive online summit via live video, the company would save more than 3,300 pounds of carbon emissions per round-trip flight. And fewer emissions means cleaner air for everybody.

As a reminder of why this is so important, take a few moments to enjoy the view of our beautiful planet from space, courtesy of NASA’s live stream from the International Space Station.  Also, check out the photos below of Ustreamers doing their part!

Happy Earth Day!

Caitlin, six-year-old daughter of Ustream legal counsel, Anne Ortel, started an Earth Club at her school last week to help students become more aware of environmental problems and come up with ideas for ways to help fight those problems. Over the weekend, Caitlin spoke with the nursery manager and a store manager at the local Orchard Supply Hardware and convinced them to donate a compost bin for her school’s lunch area for fruit and veggie discards at lunch. She also convinced them to send a garden worker from OSH to her school to explain composting at an assembly. Caitlin wants the compost to be used in the currently-empty planters scattered around her school and to have those planters filled with fruit and veggie plantings.
