Oncologist, patients connect through weekly radio showBy JODIE WAGNER Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Thursday, March 26, 2009 For much of his childhood, Andres Canova planned to pursue a career in accounting. Medicine wasn't a consideration until much later. "My father is an accountant," the Buenos Aires native said. "He used to have a large firm in Argentina." Eliza Gutierrez/The Post Dr. Andres Canova, a physician with Jupiter Hematology Oncology Associates, hosts a weekly radio show at WJTW, 100.3-FM, Hometown Radio. The show is called 'Leaders in Medicine,' and invites local doctors from the community to come to the station and discuss the human aspect of medicine. His mom, an English teacher, helped point him in a different direction. "One day, she told me that maybe I could be a good psychiatrist," Canova said. "I said, 'I don't think so.''" But he did end up opting for medical school. He attended the University of Buenos Aires, where he earned his medical degree in 1991. He moved to the United States a short time later and completed a residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, followed by a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Yale University. He moved home for two years before returning to the United States seven years ago. He settled in Wellington and began practicing in central Palm Beach County. Four years ago, Canova, 42, joined Jupiter Hematology & Oncology Associates. "I moved into medicine without knowing that I wanted to do oncology, and then I discovered that medical oncology was the key to the soul of people," he said. Connecting with people is a big part of Canova's work. The father of three reaches out on a daily basis to his patients and their families, as well as listeners to his weekly radio show - Leaders in Medicine - on WJTW-FM 100.3. Canova broadcasts the show live from the WJTW studio in Jupiter and brings in a diverse group of medical professionals to chat about their background and experiences. "The microphone allows them to have a catharsis," he said of his guests. "It's a schedule you don't have in the hospital. It brings the physician to a different stature. It makes them feel good to be able to talk about how they're more than a provider." The show has struck a chord with listeners. "Some people like the stories," Canova said, "because it's refreshing to see that the physician is much more than just technical support."
