Chris Friel was first elected Mayor of his hometown at the age of 27. Dubbed the Boy Mayor, Chris served his community for nine years, three consecutive terms, as one of the youngest Mayors in Canadian history. During his time in office Chris’s hometown flourished and produced record growth in population, economics, and morale. Chris quickly gained a reputation as a fighter for the underdog and a political activist. He never shied away from taking on any issue or rolling up his sleeves to get involved, and his natural political and interpersonal skills vaulted him to the highest levels of recognition and popularity. At times the brashness of youth meant meeting a brick wall face-first, but Chris made his mark as a true leader by being a motivator, idea initiator, negotiator and facilitator. While relationships with Aboriginal communities across Canada deteriorated, Chris led the creation of agreements with Aboriginal neighbours that were recognized as national-firsts for Canada. Chris also negotiated the funding and development of a university campus in the downtown, and the opening of a charity casino in the community. A strong leader during natural and economic crisis, Chris was the calm voice of reason for the whole community. Chris has a wonderful style of weaving fascinating stories with significant life lessons in a funny and entertaining manner. The listeners will go away feeling reenergized, with new knowledge and a fresh perspective on the future.
