LIFE BALL – “FIGHTING AIDS AND CELEBRATING LIFE SINCE" SINCE 1993

Life Ball in Vienna, Austria, was the first AIDS charity event worldwide to take place in a political building: The Vienna City Hall. Ever since it premiered in 1993, Life Ball has been raising funds for people living with HIV/AIDS, has been supporting organizations and projects in the most affected regions around the world and has contributed to remove the taboos of AIDS in our society. The charitable organization behind Life Ball, AIDS LIFE, which was established in 1992 by Gery Keszler and Torgom Petrosian, decides about the allocation of the proceeds. Beside national initiatives like the Austrian AIDS Helps, the majority of the funds raised goes to international partner organizations such as amfAR – The Foundation for AIDS Research, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the MTV – Staying Alive Foundation or UNAIDS – the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.

The annual Life Ball is divided into two parts:
- the Opening Ceremony on Vienna City Hall Square
- the Life Ball Party inside the historic rooms of the City Hall.

The Opening forms the most visible, but also most emotional element of Life Ball with a flamboyant red-carpet entrance and an elaborate show consisting of music performances as well as touching speeches about current issues of the global AIDS community. Each year, thousands of visitors and about 500 national and international media representatives experience the Opening Ceremony live and for free. The Opening Ceremony traditionally ends with the Life Ball Fashion Show. About 30 of the most recognized fashion houses including, for example, Versace, Vivienne Westwood or Jean Paul Gaultier have created a specific Life Ball Fashion Show on the Red Ribbon Catwalk. After the Opening Show, the beautiful rooms of Vienna’s City Hall invite limited ticket holders to a charitable Life Ball Party, offering top-class shows and performances of national and international musicians and DJs on different floors until the early morning.

A vast number of volunteers in front and behind the scenes makes the Opening and Life Ball party possible, alongside international personalities like: Bill Clinton, Elton John, Sharon Stone, Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Antonio Banderas, Scissor Sisters, Azealia Banks, Fergie, Katy Perry, Kylie Minogue, Liza Minnelli, Holly Johnson, Naomi Campbell, Milla Jovovich or Brooke Shields – just to name a few – have shared their messages on the Life Ball stages.
