In a university Science Education Methods course for pre-service elementary teachers, we integrated the GoNorth Adventure Learning program with our project-based learning around energy and its global impact. The advantage of integrating this on-line learning technology is that students are connected with educators / explorers in the Arctic field while they are there collecting data for scientific research on global climate change and human society adaptation strategies. The GoNorth program brings real world experience into the K-12 and university teacher education classrooms. The 2009 theme of GoNorth is Nunavut regarding transboundary pollution. It will go live on March 2, 2009 as we will join 31 Polar Huskies and six educators/explorers on a 3000-mile adventure as they attempt to transect the Arctic. This is a great example of integrating learning technology to enhance formal classroom learning, and showcasing the power of education when classroom learning and real world issues are connected.
