A four-year research program, funded by the SSHRC, is in the process of examining self-directed learning (SDL) with the aim of understanding how virtual learning communities (VLC) support learning in non-formal learning (NFL) environments. A key source of data reflecting the nature of such virtual learning communities is the online transcript of any and all discussions relevant to the focus of the learning context. Effectively and efficiently mining such data, via transcript analysis techniques and tools, is an important research activity. However, carefully designing the correct methods for such an exercise is a crucial early step in the research process. This presentation will outline and discuss the compelling methodological issues and solutions to problems encountered in the crafting and execution of a robust methodology for the analysis of relevant online communication transcripts.
