Xante is a 10-week old (on Feb. 16, 2010) golden retriever who is being raised in Pittsburgh as part of The Seeing Eye Puppy Project to be a helping dog for a blind person.
His foster mom, a staffer at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, is working with the project through the Franklin County 4H in eastern Pennsylvania. Normally Pittsburgh is outside the service area of the Seeing Eye project, but Xante is a special circumstance pup.
His foster mom travels to participate in project with the Franklin County 4H once a month
Those interested in puppy raising for helping dog programs can visit www.iaadp.org (International Association of Assistance Dog Partners) for more information.
Xante will spend his first year with a foster family getting plenty of love, attention discipline. In addition, Xante comes to work with his foster mom every day to become socialized in an urban setting -- riding the bus, the train, ride the T, becoming familiar with sidewalks, sidewalk grates, curbs, traffic lights, fire trucks, police sirens, etc.
We will have more information about Xante and his life as the year progresses.
