Wide Angle Youth Media is one of the most progressive and successful youth programs in Baltimore City. The brainchild of executive director Gin Ferarra, who founded the organization in 2000, Wide Angle reaches out to the young people of Baltimore offering real life experience working with digital media. Members get professional training in video and sound recording, editing and much more. Using a collaborative approach, students create work that speaks to issues they care about, from the personal to the political. The results are powerful and empowering. To see examples visit Wide Angle’s website, their work on U-Tube and Vimeo.
Every year the organization presents a series of live events to highlight the talents Baltimore’s young people. These events culminate in a Fesitval Benefit— an evening presented at Centerstage. This year’s event—held on Monday, April 26, from 6 to 8 pm—features more than three hundred Baltimore youth who will , as Wide Angle states, “challenge stereotypes and celebrate identity through videos, performances, poetry, and fine art.” The evening is Emceed by Chris Goodman and the Youth Festival Committee. The keynote speaker is Ronald M. Shapiro.
