DURAN DURAN DURAN: Ed Flis became active in underground music around 1998, DJing at outdoor parties as well as performing live noise PAs in galleries and loft spaces - tho he'd been experimenting with sound and producing tracks since long before that. Together with Michael Chaiken, and Tony Gabor, they became "Duran Duran Duran". Chaiken and Gabor remain involved with the Duranx3 project as advisors, but it's Flis that is the primary artist involved with the musical production these days. Still living in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA, he has been involved with the world famous Cock Rock Disco records from NYC and Berlin, as well as Planet Mu and Irritant from the UK. After years of various remix collaborations and splits, he released his first album "Very Pleasure" in 2004 to massive critical acclaim. He has traveled extensively since 2001 playing many live concerts and festivals throughout USA, Europe and Japan. He's currently working on his second full-length LP for Cock Rock Disco as well as 12"s for the Peace Off, Sadistic, and Sonic Belligeranza labels. Some appearances have been: Wasted festival - Berlin, Marke B - Berlin, Wood II, Wood VI and Wood X – Belgium. Nu Music festival- Stevanger Norway and Night of the stars - London. He has also been on tour with artists such as Jason Forrest, Knifehandchop, and Xanopticon and has performed along side of Afrika Bambaataa, Blowfly, Cannibal Ox and Carl Craig.
Coming from Minneapolis,
BLÆRG began as Scott Wehman, a bassist for varied local metal bands since the age of 15, was searching for more alternate musical outlets. Kismet brought him across an article entitled “How to Begin Experiments in Electronic Music.” Scott followed the detailed advice of the article and, having obtained some equipment via the internet, began the experiment. Scott readily embraced the freedom of electronica after the inconsistencies and lack of creative liberties found in a band setting. Soon he found that his audio-visions reached far beyond the meager memory capabilities of his hobbled tackle and he enlarged his search radius. This led him to peer-to-peer music sharing which further expanded his scope of musical possibilities. “I became obsessed with this “new” music (breakcore/idm etc.) and the literally endless possibilities it implied. My total fascination with the idea of sampling/manipulation continues to thrive and grow to this day.”
BLÆRG’s fierce determination to spread awareness of this sound has led to local Midwest performances including Indianapolis, Indiana and Detroit Michigan, farther east to New York City and even internationally to Toronto, Canada, Ghent, Belgium and Rotterdam in The Netherlands. BLÆRG has performed and appeared on compilations alongside a variety of notable artists including Dev/Null and Xanopticon.
Coming from NY
SPEAKONION | IBN | Barcore | Blending chaotic harsh-noise textures with furious breakcore rhythms has become a goal, a calling card, and ultimately a mantra for Speak Onion, the somewhat mysterious moniker of Dan Abatemarco, beat-maker, bassist, noisician and incarcerated garbageman-poet from Woodside, Queens. Speak Onion’s love/hate relationship with the break-beats manifests itself as decidedly break-y music, but with the beats abusively processed beyond recognition and drowning in gobs of feedback and noise. Underneath the miasma the beats and noise are plodding basslines that relentlessly remind the subwoofers who’s boss. This haphazard aesthetic leaves Speak Onion floating somewhere between the worlds of noise music, electronic, and experimental music, with listeners not sure whether to dance, mosh, or stand still listening with rapt attention. Either way is fine.
