Meet Momiji, Hiro and Kisa, three foster Shibas with Shiba Inu Rescue Association (SIRA).
Momiji - 4 month old Cream Male Momiji is a sweet, loving little boy who had a horrendous start in life. At only 14 weeks old he was thrown out the window of a moving car and sustained a broken leg. He was rescued by a passerby who contacted SIRA so that he could get the medical treatment he needed. After being examined by a surgeon it has been determined that Momiji's leg is healing remarkably well on it's own. He has great mobility, stability and the fracture is already fusing. He will need to be rechecked when he reaches skeletal maturity between 10-14 months. So long as the growth plates or knee are not affected he should not need any surgery.
Hiro - 4 month old Black & Tan Male Hiro is a sweet and loving lug of a Shiba! He was born with cerebellar hypoplasia. Because of this condition his right eye is also partially blind. He tends to tilt his head to the side in order to see and on occasion looses his balance. He also has depth perception problems.
Kisa - 4 month old Sesame Female Kisa is a sweet and loving little Shiba! Like her brother Hiro she was born with cerebellar hypoplasia. Because of this condition she is mostly deaf. She will on occasion loose her balance. She also has depth perception problems.
A NOTE ON CEREBELLAR HYPOPLASIA Cerebellar Hypoplasia is caused either by trauma or disease to a mother dog while she is carrying puppies. This results in underdevelopment of the puppies' cerebellums causing uncoordinated and jerky movements. It is not a treatable condition. Hiro and Kisa will never get any better, but they will not get worse either. They are expected to have normal life spans. Neither has any idea that there is something wrong with them so care must be taken to ensure that they do not fall and hurt themselves.
