ABOUT BERGEN KUNSTHALL Bergen Kunsthall is one of Norway’s premier arenas for contemporary art. With a variety that spans large solo exhibitions of international and Norwegian artists to curated group exhibitions and thematic productions, Bergen Kunsthall wishes to reflect the latest trends in the art scene. The institution also actively produces its own projects and is in that way an independent player in the development of contemporary art. Although Bergen Kunsthall does not comprise in terms of presenting aesthetically strong exhibitions, it is also dedicated to disseminating art to as wide an audience as possible. Bergen Kunsthall wishes to maintain a varied and continuously up-to-date programme through exhibitions, talks, artist presentations, catalogue publications and a wide range of dissemination activities.
With its three sections - Kunsthallen, Gallery NO.5 and Landmark – Bergen Kunsthall is a flexible art institution that accommodates all directions in a broad range of artistic practice. Our activities include both large-scale exhibitions, small exhibitions in Gallery NO.5, and a wide range of weekly events at Landmark. Its institutional model has made Bergen Kunsthall a very active arena for cultural production and it is today the most important meeting place for innovative culture in Bergen across genre boundaries.
THE KUNSTHALL The kunsthall itself consists of Bergen Kunsthall’s four large exhibition halls. The exhibition halls form the core of the institution and make up one of Norway’s most unique yet flexible exhibition premises. The exhibition programme features a balance between Norwegian and international art. Bergen Kunsthall produces all of its exhibitions itself or in close collaboration with other international art institutions, resulting in extensive solo exhibitions of important international artists and progressive group exhibitions featuring contemporary art from Norway and abroad.
GALLERY NO.5 Gallery NO.5 is an independent gallery in Bergen Kunsthall. As its name indicates, Gallery NO.5 is the institution’s fifth exhibition space. Gallery NO.5 hosts small-scale exhibitions, primarily solo exhibitions focusing on recent work. The gallery exhibits projects by both Norwegian and international artists that are specially adapted to fit the structure of the exhibition space. In addition to temporary exhibitions, Gallery NO.5 is Bergen Kunsthall’s department for the sale and dissemination of contemporary art. The gallery sells a wide range of graphic art from its commission store. Gallery NO.5 also offers consultancy services in connection with commissioned art projects, research and professional advice in connection with art purchases, and art rental services for companies.
LANDMARK Landmark was founded in 2001 as Bergen Kunsthall’s third exhibition arena. Landmark is primarily a viewing space for new media and cultural expressions that go beyond the possibilities of the institution and the “white cube”. The premises has been designed and adapted to host video screenings, electronic art, concerts, film, theatre, performances and lectures. In addition to its own productions, Bergen Kunsthall also collaborates with local, national and international players on productions at Landmark. With events held almost daily throughout the year, Landmark is also an important meeting place for the city’s creative milieus in all artistic disciplines, and an arena that actively reflects the latest trends in a broad art scene.
Landmark is also a cafe and bar that serves delicious, reasonably-priced snacks and sandwiches, cakes and coffees, and offers daily newspapers and free wireless internet access. Bergen Kunsthall is responsible for both Landmark’s artistic activity and the management of the cafe.
