SignKid: Here's the story. We live in Portland, Oregon. We got an Obama sign in April, 2008, and it was stolen off our lawn within five days. On September 20, we got another sign (after searching for some time) and put it up on the lawn again. The next morning it was gone, so we decided we'd make our own homemade sign and set up a camera to catch the thief in the act.
October 22 Update
TeachKids: After four days off the air, our webcam has been reactivated. It is our intention to keep the stream live until November 5, at which time we will host a celebration on the lawn whether Barack Obama wins the election or not. SignKid and I hope viewers from around the world will again enjoy watching our (hopefully inanimate) political signs and the comings and goings of neighborhood wildlife while reading and/or participating in lively round-the-clock political discussions.
During the past month, both SignKid and I have become more aware than ever of the degree to which Americans cherish their freedom of speech. Therefore, we have made the decision to allow the chat to continue with minimal moderation on our part. We hope that free speech will be combined with respectful, appropriate, on-topic speech, and ask viewers to bear in mind that people of all ages drop in here from time to time to see the sign and to read the political discussion. If the chat becomes inappropriate, we suggest that you return later when it is likely that the discussion has returned to current events and politics.
We have received cards, letters, photos and gifts (e.g., official political signs, yard flamingos, cookies, T-shirts, etc.) from people all over the world. We would like to thank them and the thousands of viewers who have made this experience so memorable for our family and who have contributed to this historic U.S. presidential election in a positive way.
