Change Nigeria Project (CNP) in collaboration with the House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, a Committee in the Nigerian Lower House in the National Assembly, will hold a conference on October 1, 2009, at the prestigious Carnegie Institute for International Peace in Washington, D.C.
The Conference theme, “Nigeria @ 49: The Way Forward on Contemporary Issues” will discuss some of the “hot button” contemporary issues such as Electoral Reforms, Voting Rights, The Role of Nigerian Diaspora in Nation Building, as well as the Niger Delta. The October 1st date of this very important conference, which is also the Nigerian Independence Day celebration, underscores the fact that there’s not so much to celebrate on this day as the country continues to drift with less than a clear focus and its attendant political and religious violence.
Notable Nigerians in and outside the country such as the former Chief Justice of the Federation, Chief Justice Uwais, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Malam Nasir el Rufai, Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chief Ufot Ekaete, are some of the participants that are billed to speak at this conference.
The collaboration of the House Committee on Diaspora Affairs with CNP on this conference, in line with the House Committee’s constitutional objectives, is to establish alliances with Nigerian professional organizations in the developed world with a view to seeking solutions to the myriads of problems confronting the Nigerian nation through well-thought out policies and robust legislations, Mr. Femi Odere, is the Committee’s Liaison Officer in the United States.
