My Son Guy and myself live in a little studio apartment in the Tenderloin of San Francisco, just around the corner from the spot where Floyd Thursby was shot down in Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon. You may remember John Huston's premier film of the same name, which set the persona of Humphrey Bogart as Private Eye Sam Spade. THE MALTESE FALCON is often considered a contender for the First American Film Noir. Our apartment building may have been the home of Miles and Iva Archer, who were Spade's partner and mistress, respectively.
We shall play with the conceit that the inept spirit of Miles still lives on with us, attempting to make sense of the World, our Nation, and the City which was the home of Spade and Archer.
