She has been named Demi which is short for Demetria: goddess of corn & harvest as she liked to sleep in the corn stalks off of my deck.
Demi began to come around about a month before I trapped her. She would eat dry food on my front porch while my boy kitty, Stewy would watch her through the screen door. About a week before I trapped her I was doing my best to win her over to get her inside the house because the weather was changing. One evening, while dropping treats over the deck railing to her, I saw her side move and the urgency to get her inside was upon me.
I have never trapped an animal before, but called around to find a shelter that would let me use a trap. I spoke with a wonderful person at the Bucktown TreeHouse Humane Soc. and she walked me through the trapping process and sent me on my way to get it done.
On Tuesday, 9/22, I put the trap down where Demi usually entered my yard with both doors secured open and food in the middle of the trap. She went in and ate the food which meant Wednesday, 9/23 was trap setting day. I paced back and forth indoors checking to see if the trap had been tripped. Mercifully, I got her and brought her into my small half bath and tried to calm her as best I could.
Demi started to let me pet her lightly, but would still cringe some. She then started to lay in the sink a lot. A sign she was getting ready to pop. Since I have never done this before, I learned the hard way that clumping litter is BAD, especially when she had the babies in the litter box!!
I had checked on her at about 1 am on 9/28 before going to bed and she was in the sink. In the morning, I opened the door after giving my 3 buttheads their treats, just to say hello to her. There were babies squealing and nursing...stuck together!
Mind you no coffee at this point and panic was high. I grabbed the scissors off the PC desk, grabbed the carrier and went back in...3 were easy to free and put in the carrier. Once I had them in the carrier, Momma went to hide behind the toilet and I scooped up the 3 that were stuck together and carefully cut them apart. The cords were already dry because of the litter and surprisingly she was able to have 5 of the 6 sacks.
Demi had litter clumped all over her backside, but she was able to clean herself by the next day. She wanted no part of the carrier (too soon after being trapped) so I got a soft blanket and transferred the family and left so Mom could get back to caring for them.
That's how Day 1 ended...and Demi and her kids are all doing great!
----- Breeze (Sophie) and Billow (Annie) off to their forever home:
--- On Thursday, 12/3/2009 at 1 pm (central), Breeze and Billow left to meet their new mom at her work office. They had their first field trip to the Nursing Home to meet their grandmother and everyone there loved their furry little butts. They then went back to Mom’s work and played with everyone there and loved Mom’s boss’s desk chair (good napping). Once home, they received tons of attention from the family and are doing very well in their forever home. --- --- ---
----- Surge and Zephyr’s Big Cross Country Adventure
--- JLA0214: Friday, 12/4/2009, at 9:22 am (central), I backed out of the garage and we were on our way…destination: Grosse Ile, MI
Attempted a rest stop 2 hrs in (neither ate, drank or used the potty).
Around 4 pm eastern I arrived at the Grosse Ile Animal Shelter and met Jodiann87, YIPPY! We got the boys into the office with their litter box, food and water then I was able to meet the babies at the shelter.
Just a few minutes later, Catsrthebest and Winston arrived, and introduction to the boys (and me) was underway. --- After a bit, we loaded up Catsrthebest’s car with the boys and their stuff and made our way to our respective expressways.
---CATSRTHEBEST: The boys spent the next two nights in my spare bathroom. They were quiet and cautious the first night but settled in quickly the next day and were playing a lot.
My cat Winston stood guard outside the door most of the time they were in the bathroom. Sunday morning we made our way to the first border crossing into Canada.
The Canadian border patrol agent asked about the kittens but had never heard of ustream. He was very nice and wished us well. We then made our way across southern Ontario to the designated meeting spot at Niagara Falls, NY. The boys slept most of the way and ate during our pit stop. We crossed the border back into the US and me and the boys had the pleasure of meeting Calicocallie and her family!!!
---CALICOCALLIE: 6:50am-My family and I left Massachusetts to meet Catsrthebest and the boys in Niagra Falls,N.Y. We arrived at 12:50 pm, We got to see a little of the Falls before they arrived. Around 3pm we had the pleasure of meeting Catsrthebest, Surge & Zephyr. The feeling of finally getting to actually hold and kiss these little guys is impossible to put into words. The gratitude we have for Jla and Catsrthebest will never be forgotten, they went out of their way to make this journey possible. We spent several hours with Catsrthebest playing with the boys, talking and laughing we had a great time. At 7pm we hit the road to come back to Massachusetts. We stopped 5 times on the way home, a few for us and a few for the boys so they could eat, go potty and run around the truck. As we got closer to home, the boys decided they wanted to get out of the carrier, all you could see was these 4 little white arms reaching out of the carrier door it was so cute. We arrived home around 3 am, got settled in and played for a couple of hours. They are doing great, eating, sleeping, playing and we are loving them. I have some pics that I will post.
