Eighth Annual Caprock Celtic Christmas Dec 20 7pm at The Legacy Performance Center (14th & Ave. O)
On Sunday December 20, in the Talkington Great Hall at The Legacy Performance Center (14th & Ave. O), the Vernacular Music Center, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Caprock Celtic Association, and the Lubbock YWCA present the 8th Annual Caprock Celtic Christmas. Singers, players, dancers, storytellers, and more gather to perform traditional repertoires of the session, including traditional Irish, Welsh, Breton, and English dance; Gaelic-, Welsh-, and English-language traditional songs; instrumental dance tunes and slow airs, and much more. The much-loved fear an tí (³man of the house²) Tom McGovern returns as host. Special guests include Scots piper Tom Campbell, Irish tenor Nat Cooper, bouzouki virtuoso Roger Landes, the Appalachian banjo/fiddle duo of Mason Brown (Boulder CO) and Doug Goodhart (Kansas City MO), and the old-timey country duo of Chipper Thompson & Kim Treiber-Thompson (Taos NM). Lubbock¹s trad-Irish band Johnny Faa play tunes and songs from their debut CD Last Night¹s Fun; the Tech Set-Dancers provide the eightsome reels & jigs of the Clare Caledonian Set, and the TTU Celtic Ensemble presents English rag-morris dances, Anglo-Appalachian fiddle music, Celto-Balkan crossover tunes, the choral repertoire of the Sacred Harp, and the Welsh mid-Winter hobbyhorse ritual called Mari Lwyd. The event will be previewed on KOHM¹s Celtic Shores program on Friday Dec 18 at 9pm and Saturday Dec 19 at 11am, and will be simul-cast live over KOHM (89.1fm; kohm.org) to listeners across the South Plains. Sunday night¹s performance begins at 7pm.
The Celtic Christmas has quickly become a Lubbock favorite with adults and kids alike and advance purchase is strongly advised. Tickets, which raise funds for the Vernacular Music Center Scholarship at Texas Tech, are available at all Select-A-Seat locations as well as at the door.
