This hummingbird nest is on our back porch in the SF Bay Area, California. She's wedged it carefully over a 4" hook and some string lights. She's totally protected from the wind and rain since it's a covered porch. You are seeing a view from a mirror mounted above and to the side of the nest. Because of the way she's placed her nest, the camera is only 7 inches away. That's why the image is a little distorted and blurry.
She is an Anna's Hummingbird and has been named Tink by some of the early visitors. I think it fits. :) (http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/167/Variations/Annas_Hummingbird.aspx)
There are two eggs. The first one was laid on 3/31 or so and the second one shortly thereafter. The incubation period for Anna's is from 14 - 19 days. So, start to watch for the hatching some time after 4/14.
We'll try to keep the stream live stream live during daylight hours.
There have been some questions about the sound. The nest is very close to our house and the microphone is very sensitive. Sometimes I turn the sound off so our voices aren't broadcast. Most of the time however, I will leave the sound on. Besides chirping and wings flapping, you may also hear:
the daycare next door (children playing)
wind chimes
plastic roof expanding in the sun
rain
chirping
cat meowing at window right under nest
me sneezing
train
and of course, traffic.
Here is a link to the Flickr set where I posted up still pictures taken with a much better camera! http://www.flickr.com/photos/zoetropico/sets/72157623757680646/
