The Biological Weapons Convention is the foremost international instrument to address the possibility that biology can be used for hostile purposes. Each year the BWC addresses issues designed to strengthen its implementation. In 2009, the BWC will be discussing, and promoting common understanding and effective action on promoting capacity building in the fields of disease surveillance, detection, diagnosis, and containment of infectious diseases. In August, the BWC hosts an international Meeting of Experts to gather information from the world's foremost experts in relevant fields. For the first time some of the public sessions of this meeting will be webcast live.
