A Short RNC Anecdote

Posted on by

Yesterday, at 4:00 pm sharp, all non security personnel were forced out of the building. As we walked passed the cold faced Secret Service standing at the door I could hear the heavy pant of the K-9 Bomb Detection Dogs. Turned around for just a second, my eyes idly followed a large German Shepherd as he paced around the room and disappeared past a dozen men in black. What specifically those men in black did next I have no idea, my line of vision had been obstructed when the door shut behind me, however one thing was for sure…The rock gods of the republican party were arriving in two days and things for both the RNC and Ustream were about to get crazy.

With our first stream of the convention, join viewers from around the world and watch McCain address how the RNC will change because of Hurricane Gustav. [live stream]

Check back tomorrow for live coverage all day and all week. Five cameras, one convention, millions of viewers.

See you there.

Social Marketing: How to Attract Viewers to Your Live Show

Posted on by

As opposed to a blog post or a YouTube video, which are static and people can view at their leisure, your Ustream show is live and you must undertake the difficult task of grouping your viewers together concurrently and at a specified time. Through a combination of long and short term announcements you can use Social Marketing to capture their attention.

socialnetworking.jpg

Your Blog:
The important thing about your blog is that your subscribers will read it at some point. It might not be now, or in an hour, but chances are they will see the post before the day is over. You won’t be able to use your blog to get instant viewers, but it is a great place to notify them of future shows. Think of it as planting a seed… some will remember and some will forget, but either way they definitely hear about your show (this helps because when you post about it later on Twitter they will remember the blog post). (Tip – Announce your upcoming show three days before – then mention it again the day of)

Twitter:twitter_bird.gif
If Twitter wasn’t your best friend, it is now. Become intimate with this beautiful tool because it is the best way to get instant viewers. Post a message to Twitter ten to twenty minutes before you go live – this way your followers can put aside time and they know its coming up. Post again once you go live. Truth be told a lot of people will forget that you’re going to do a show, especially if its your first time. Twitter is the perfect way to remind them. (Tip – Don’t just spam a link to your show, make sure to keep it friendly and human, maybe ask a question. Then be sneaky and inconspicuously put the link in.)

Newsletters, Social Network Messages:
Use sparingly! I know it, you know it, everyone knows it – Spam sucks. Do not spam. Newsletters and other ways of messaging are good ways to notify potential viewers, however you must do it with tact. Once in a while is fine just don’t use a lot of exclamation points and keep it simple. If they get annoyed then stop immediately – you’re doing something wrong and continuing will only hurt you.

Thats today’s short Social Marketing lesson.

I’ll be posting a series of these so you should probably subscribe to the blog. If you have any questions, or different ideas leave a comment and I’ll respond. Even better – if you have different ideas – go write your own blog post and then send me the link!

About Missy Higgins

Missy Higgins is an award-winning Australian singer-songwriter, best known for her hit singles “Scar” and “The Special Two” off her debut album The Sound of White. Her second album, On a Clear Night was released in April 2007.

On July 7, 2007, Higgins participated in the Australian leg of Live Earth performing her own set, as well as joining Paul Kelly, Kev Carmody and John Butler on stage for the song “From Little Things Big Things Grow.” The song could have been considered “the event’s anthem” and Rolling Stone cited it as a highlight, stating that the “whole crowd sung along – all eleven verses.”

In 2004, Higgins was nominated in four categories at the ARIA Awards. These included “Best Female Artist” and “Single of the Year”. At the awards ceremony on October 17 she received the award for “Best Pop Release”.

About James Blunt
James Blunt is an English singer-songwriter whose debut album, Back to Bedlam, and single releases — especially the number one hit “You’re Beautiful” — brought him to fame in 2005. His style is a mix of pop, folk and acoustic rock. Along with vocals, James Blunt plays a wide variety of instruments including the piano, guitar, organ, marimba and mellotron. He is signed to Linda Perry’s American label Custard Records. Blunt became the first British artist to top the American singles chart in nearly a decade when his song “You’re Beautiful” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006; the last British artist to do so had been Elton John in 1997 with the song “Candle in the Wind 1997″. Blunt won two BRIT Awards and was nominated for five Grammy Awards in 2006.Have a taste of James Blunt’s music here:
