Mobile Live Broadcasting For All…by Ustream

Over the past five years, Ustream went from a lone pioneer in the mobile live video space to the leader in an industry that became a cultural phenomena. Live video broadcast from, and to, mobile devices is literally changing the way people and companies communicate.

Last year alone, Ustream delivered over 75 million mobile live broadcasts, making it the most powerful, robust and scalable mobile live video platform in the world.  Now everyone has a satellite truck in his or her pocket.

Recently, a couple startups have generated a lot of attention around the idea that consumers can share live video on Twitter, leading to speculation that this capability might lead to new behaviors in content sharing for both consumers and companies. We wholeheartedly agree. In fact, we’ve been enabling the changing communications tide for some time:

  • Beginning 2010 and into 2011, more than 5 million viewed the Arab Spring democratic uprisings,
  • In 2011, 50 million viewers witnessed and communicated via Ustream during the Japan earthquake,
  • In 2011, a single citizen broadcast the Occupy Movement for 48 hours to more than 2 million viewers, earning him Time Magazine’s Person of the Year,
  • In 2012, anti-Putin protests broadcast to more than 8 million viewers caused Russia to attack Ustream, and
  • In 2014, citizens of Ukraine broadcast the uprising there to more than 10 million viewers.

To meet the needs of companies who want to leverage this behavior shift, we built a powerful set of APIs that allow anyone to create applications that stream live video from mobile devices.

Very soon, we’ll be announcing an addition to our APIs that makes it trivially easy for anyone to create countless variations on the Meerkat concept to leverage mobile devices and live video to communicate in new and creative ways, while leveraging social networks, like Twitter and Facebook, to share their messages.

To accelerate the development of these applications, Ustream is opening its live mobile broadcasting SDK and APIs to the public. Previously available only to Ustream internal developers, the SDK will allow any company to build a Meerkat-like or other creative live video solution and leverage Ustream’s live video platform for immediate scalability. The APIs and SDK will be free for developers to use to create and test their applications.

Soon, any company will be able use Ustream’s simple SDK to harness the communication power of live video, the ubiquity of mobile devices and the unmatched scalability of Ustream’s platform to market their brands or even communicate corporate direction internally. By bringing to market the ability to ‘build your own’ mobile streaming app, communications from brands, media companies and consumers can co-mingle for the ultimate streaming content experience. Whether it’s sports fans in the stands at a NASCAR race, participants in a triathlon streaming from a GoPro, or attendees at a major keynote at a trade show, more than ever brands and media companies will be able to share live experiences from the viewpoint of the consumer.

In addition to basic video sharing, Ustream is adding powerful enterprise class features like security, eCDN and SSO to deliver true business-ready capabilities. Ustream Live Video Channel Racks Up 309 Million Views

A Ustream channel broadcasting from a certain livecam in Decorah, Iowa has become the latest Internet video sensation. In fact, it is possibly the most popular live video of all time with more than 309 million views and 94,000 subscribers.

The camera, operated by the Raptor Research Project, is located above a bald eagle nest, and last Wednesday night it captured the mother eagle laying her first egg of 2015. By Thursday morning, the channel has racked up an additional 181,000 views.

The Decorah eagles aren’t the only feathered friends building a worldwide audience on Ustream. The OKC Great Horned Owl-Cam channel broadcasts live from a second-story planter ledge at a home in Oklahoma City, where a family of Great Horned Owls made its home in 2012. Now in “Season 4,” the channel has more than 9,000 subscribers and has amassed more than 5.7 million views worldwide.

While these windows into nature are always appealing to a broad audience, they are also a testimonial to the power of live video. Live video is a powerful, tool engaging people with emotional content. Yet, it enables the broadcaster to reach a much larger audience than would ever be possible in-person at a live event. That’s why live video as a communications tool is gaining traction in the enterprise and being used to share exciting corporate events like conferences, product launches, shareholder meetings, executive presentations, trainings, and more.

Century-Old Event Goes High Tech with Ustream

When the nation’s top dogs take center stage next week at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, viewers around the world will enjoy the event live via Ustream.

Dating back to 1877, the Westminster show is the second–longest continuously held sporting event in the United States, behind only the Kentucky Derby. Despite the WKC’s roots in the 19th century, it has embraced modern, high-tech communications with Ustream live video streaming to bring the action and emotions to viewers around the globe.

On Monday, February 16, beginning at 8 p.m. EST, the hound, toy, non-sporting and herding groups will be in the spotlight. On Tuesday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. EST, viewers will enjoy the sporting, working and terrier groups … and the highly anticipated Best in Show announcement!

Of course, the event entails far more action than can be captured on a single channel. That’s why the Westminster Kennel Club has dedicated 8 Ustream channels to bring you live action from every single ring, plus a live Twitter feed tracking the hashtag #WKCDogShow.

Wainhouse Research: Businesses Finding Fresh Applications for Live Streaming Video

Town halls and employee training? According to a recent survey by Wainhouse Research, these tried-and-true applications for live online video are quite popular. And these days, hyper-connected businesses are taking one-to-many video further. Much further.

In a survey of more than 1,000 executives, Wainhouse discovered that “employee training” and “executive presentations” top the list in terms of the most common one-to-many video applications, coming in at 51% and 47%, respectively. Take a closer look at other responses that scored 40% or higher and you may find some surprises, including

  • Corporate branding and advertising
  • IT support
  • Product launch

Engage! Using Live Streaming Video to Build Employee Involvement

Researchers from Deloitte recently asked more than 2,500 business and HR leaders to rate the urgency of numerous business issues, ranging from workforce capability to diversity and inclusion. No less than 79 percent of respondents rated the issue of employee retention and engagement as “urgent” or “important.”

And how are they doing on that front? Not so great, according to a separate survey by Gallup:

An alarming 70% of American workers are not showing up to work committed to delivering their best performance, and this has serious implications for the bottom line of individual companies and the U.S. economy as a whole.

What’s a CEO to do?

Smart leaders are realizing that, if employees are going to be engaged in their work, they need a direct line to top management. From the mailroom to the boardroom, employees need to know the organization’s mission, they need to know what success looks like, and they need to know that management cares — and they don’t want to read about it in an email.

That’s where live streaming video comes in.

Live streaming video offers employees real-time engagement with top leadership, whether those leaders are delivering prepared presentations or answering questions off the cuff at a virtual town hall. It builds a personal bridge that can fuel a whole new attitude toward the organization and the employee’s role within it.

Webinar: Live Video Boosts Sales, Marketing, Media Presence

On Thursday, January 22nd, Ustream CEO Brad Hunstable and Steve Vonder Haar, Senior Analyst at Wainhouse Research, will co-present The Burgeoning Set of Use Cases for Live Video Streaming,” a live webinar highlighting enterprise uses of live streaming video beyond internal presentations.

According to a recent Wainhouse survey, internal applications such as employee training and executive presentations continue to be the most popular uses of live streaming video. However, outward-facing applications such as customer service, corporate advertising and branding, and IT support are all gaining traction.

Ustream CEO to Join Real-Time Academy

Ustream CEO Brad Hunstable has been invited to join the Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences, a consortium of leaders in technology, journalism, business, and culture that plays a vital role in choosing the winners of the Shorty Awards, honoring the best content producers in social media.

Among the Academy’s current members are Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, General Electric CMO Beth Comstock, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, actor/writer Stephen Fry, and author Neil Gaiman.

Now in their seventh year, the Shorty Awards “honor the best of social media, recognizing the people and organizations producing real-time short form content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, Vine, and the rest of the social Web.” Every year, millions of people take to Twitter to submit their favorite content creators from entertainment, news and media, technology and innovation, arts and design, and global issues as Shorty Award nominees.

The Academy will choose the winners of the 7th Annual Shorty Awards when finalists are determined at the end of February. Each Academy member is assigned about 10 categories based on his or her area of expertise, with about seven finalists per category. The judging process will take place from February 27 to March 9, and winners will be announced in April at a live-streamed ceremony in New York City.

Ustream for Change Embraces Luz Para Venezuela

When we launched Ustream for Change two months ago, we were overwhelmed with the positive response we received toward the cause. Citizen journalism had been at the core of the Ustream platform since the beginning, so creating a formalized program to educate and enable anyone who wanted to use live video for social change with the tools to do so, seemed like the next logical step.

After sifting through more than 170 applications, we are proud to announce that Miami-based non-profit Luz Para Venezuela (Light for Venezuela), will be our first member voted in by our internal committee.
