Ustream CEO to Join Real-Time Academy

Posted on by

Ustream CEO Brad Hunstable has been invited to join the Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences, a consortium of leaders in technology, journalism, business, and culture that plays a vital role in choosing the winners of the Shorty Awards, honoring the best content producers in social media.

Among the Academy’s current members are Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, General Electric CMO Beth Comstock, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, actor/writer Stephen Fry, and author Neil Gaiman.

Brad SM

Now in their seventh year, the Shorty Awards “honor the best of social media, recognizing the people and organizations producing real-time short form content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, Vine, and the rest of the social Web.” Every year, millions of people take to Twitter to submit their favorite content creators from entertainment, news and media, technology and innovation, arts and design, and global issues as Shorty Award nominees.

The Academy will choose the winners of the 7th Annual Shorty Awards when finalists are determined at the end of February. Each Academy member is assigned about 10 categories based on his or her area of expertise, with about seven finalists per category. The judging process will take place from February 27 to March 9, and winners will be announced in April at a live-streamed ceremony in New York City.

General nominations for the 7th Annual Shorty Awards will open early this year; for information about nominating brands, agencies, and organizations visit the Shorty Awards website.

Ustream Snags Two 2014 Streaming Media Readers’ Choice Awards

Pop the champagne and crank up the party jams: Ustream is the winner of two 2014 Streaming Media Readers’ Choice Awards, for Live Video Platform and Video Advertising Solution!

This year, the readers of Streaming Media voted for their favorites in a record-setting 31 categories. On November 19, the winners were announced at the Streaming Media West conference in Huntington Beach, California, which was broadcast live via Ustream.

Not only is this the highest honor in our industry — it’s also the only awards program decided by the end users (that’s you!). So as you can imagine, we’re feeling pretty darn proud.

Here’s our Sales Engineering Manager, Scott Grizzle, accepting the awards on behalf of the Ustream team:

We’re especially thrilled to see LiveAd take home the Video Advertising Solution award. We built LiveAd to offer our clients a more impactful, engaging advertising experience, and to see it emerge as the top vote-getter in its category tells us that, to paraphrase Sally Field, “You like it! You really, really like it!”

So, from the bottom of our humble little hearts, thank you, thank you, thank you for your votes, for your support, and for being the best darn fans a team could ask for!

Streaming Media Hearts Ustream!

SM100 award

Wow, color us overwhelmed — not one, but two recognitions for Ustream in the last couple of weeks from Streaming Media.

Every year since 2011, the editors of Streaming Media have assigned themselves an unenviable task: Review more than 250 companies to create their list of The One Hundred Companies that Matter Most in Online Video.

This year, that list includes Ustream.

Over the years, the growing popularity of online video has forced the editors to narrow their scope, deciding in 2013 to “focus exclusively on the technology companies that enable content creators and publishers to innovate and build their audiences.”

With the field of candidates decided upon, Streaming Media asks its editorial and publishing staff to rank each one on a scale of 1 (doesn’t belong on the list at all) to 5 (absolutely must be on the list if the list is to have any credibility). After the votes are counted and averaged to yield a score for each candidate, those with the 100 highest scores make the list. This year, that includes us!

And it’s not just the Streaming Media staff that sings the praises of Ustream. The magazine’s readers like us plenty, too, nominating Ustream in five categories for the 2014 Streaming Media Readers Choice Awards. This is the highest honor in online video technology and products, as it’s the only awards program in which winners are decided by end users — that’s you!

To cast your vote, visit the 2014 Streaming Media Readers Choice Awards page between now and October 24. Ustream is up for awards in the categories of:

  • Education Video Platform
  • Enterprise Video Platform
  • Live Video Platform
  • Cloud Encoding/Transcoding
  • Video Advertising Solution

Streaming Media will announce the finalists — the top three vote-getters in each category — on October 31 and present the awards at Streaming Media West on November 19.

Forbes Recognizes Ustream for “Most Engaging” Annual Report of 2013

forbes blog

Let’s face it: when you think of annual reports, the word “engaging” is probably not one that immediately springs to mind.

Unless, of course, you’re thinking of the Ustream 2013 Annual Report. Go ahead, check it out. We’ll wait.

Pretty cool, huh? We think so … and so does Forbes. That’s why Ustream made their list of “5 Brands That Nailed Their Annual Reports” and was singled out as most engaging of the bunch.

Forbes contributor Ross Crooks set out to prove that it is possible for annual reports to “do the seemingly impossible: engage stakeholders and win loyal fans.” And while he singles out four other worthy examples, he declares that “the award for Most Engaging Report goes to Ustream.”

A few more of his comments:

  • “an engaging motion-filled masterpiece”
  • “a clever piece of work that communicates a willingness to do the unconventional”
  • “Takeaway: Beauty and reporting can go hand in hand.”

History: Inauguration LIVE on Ustream

Posted on by

Over the last two years, Ustream has had the privilege to work closely with President Elect Obama’s campaign.  We stream speeches, we streamed townhalls, and we even had the honor to stream his victory speech.

History will be made Jan 20th, and you will all be able to watch this LIVE on Ustream.   As always, our interactive chat will be there to make this experience more of a social experience.

If you are not going to fight the traffic in DC and the pat downs from the secret service, then watch the inauguration of fellow Ustreamer, President Barack Obama, with me.

Ustream.TV: AlwaysOn and ShowingOff

aohollywoodlogowinner200px.jpgDoes it sound count as showing off if we announce an award with a healthy dose of blushing?

Either way, I’m bashfully proud to announce that Ustream.TV has been chosen by AlwaysOn as an OnHollywood 100 company. And of the 100 top private tech companies in digital media, AlwaysOn’s editorial staff picked out Ustream as “Best Up & Coming Company”. We were one of two companies distinguished amongst the top 100, along with “Best Overall” winner iLike.

I’m blushing, and so should you. Without our broadcasters, our viewers, our Ustreamers… without YOU… none of this would be possible. It’s been a wild upswing of a ride thus far, and hopefully you’ll be around when “Best Up & Coming” converts to “Best Already There”.

Other winners include mainstays Slide, RockYou, Flixter, Kongregate, Mochi Media, and about 94 other outstanding social media peer comanies.

Here’s the proper announcement here, and the full list of all 100 winners here.
