3rd UPDATE: Ustream Election Day Central

We’re all about politics on Nov. 6. All day on Election Day, the world will tune into Ustream for the most comprehensive coverage online — or anywhere for that matter. Throughout the year, we’ve seen live news events like the Mars Rover landing and the presidential debates score big on Ustream. Election Day is shaping up to be another major draw as viewers increasingly turn to the Internet for live, interactive experiences.

Ustream has teamed up with some of the country’s leading news organizations to bring you real-time results and analysis, on-the-ground reports and exclusive behind-the-scenes access inside newsrooms. We’ve got an eclectic array of perspectives and commentary, as well as live monitoring of polling stations from Video the Vote volunteers in key battleground states. With so many choices, you can truly build your own news experience.

We’ll be adding to the schedule as Election Day nears, but here’s the lineup as of Monday morning:

  • Six streams from PBS NewsHour, including in-studio interviews with political insiders, historical campaign footage, a live newsroom cam, a closed captioned stream and two hatcams dispatched to Obama and Romney headquarters in Washington, D.C.
  • Seven hours of live coverage from CBS News with Scott Pelley, Bob Schieffer, Norah O’Donnell, John Dickerson and correspondents in battleground states.
  • Hours of coverage from WSJ Live starting at 8 p.m. EST. Guests include Rudy Giuliani, Gov. Bill Richardson, Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Karl Rove.
  • Live election monitoring from Video the Vote volunteers across the country.
  • WGBH with special election night episode of daily news magazine show ‘Greater Boston’
  • UPI Live with all-day coverage featuring panel discussions, reports from Obama campaign headquarters in Washington, D.C. and the White House.
  • Freedom Foundation with live results and analysis of national and Washington state races.
  • And another appearance by our good friends at “Live Drinking” with Election Night festivities.

How to Stream to Your Facebook Page with BFF

Hey there Ustream! We are pumped to announce the release this morning of the next version of Broadcast for Friends, our free and simple broadcaster for Facebook. Using BFF, you can go live any time to your Facebook Timeline and News Feed. Check out the great coverage of this new version over at TechCrunch.

There are some great new features in this version, including the ability to delete videos and Open Graph support, but most importantly, in this new version, you can now go live to your business and fan pages!

This is how you do it:

1. First, if you haven’t already, download BFF in the app store.

2. Open the app. It will prompt you to connect to Facebook. This is necessary to go live to Facebook 🙂

3. When the broadcast screen loads, you will see your user picture in the upper left. Click your picture to go to your profile page.

4. In the upper right corner, press the gear icon to go to the settings page.

5. You should see a heading that says “Enable Broadcast to Pages.” You need to enable Broadcast to Pages first, which will require additional Facebook permissions. When you have successfully enabled these permissions, the button should change to brown and say “Enabled.” It may take a couple seconds to change. Click “Done.” (Note: if you can’t enable this feature, it means you don’t have any Facebook pages for which you are an admin. You can set one up here.)

6. Now, when you click “Broadcast” on the camera screen, you should see a menu where you can choose onto which page you want to go live.

7. When you click “Start,” your video will stream right to your Facebook page!

We are very excited about this new release, as so many of you have asked for this feature and we can finally get it out there. I’m looking forward to seeing all of your broadcasts!

Also new in this release:

  • Delete your videos permanently (for those embarrassing party moments)
  • Broadcasting support for connections as low as 200 kbps (that’s almost any 3G connection)
  • Stability improvements as well as some helpful pointers on making the best quality videos
  • Faster broadcasting process–no more countdown!
  • …and lots of little changes to make the experience even better

Enjoy Broadcast for Friends! Here’s the download link again: http://broadcastforfriends.com/download

Ustream watch party contest starts now!

Ustream Debate Contest Oct. 3

Hey political party animals: We’re having a debate night contest and you’re invited!

On Oct. 3, President Barack Obama and prez hopeful Mitt Romney square off for the first of three presidential debates at Denver University starting at 9 p.m.

In celebration of the democratic process, we’re throwing the world’s largest watch party, complete with a contest.

We want you to BYOB (Bring Your Own Broadcast)!

To guide you a bit when planning for the contest, we’ve determined a few categories. The best watch parties of the night will be featured on our front page for millions to see. And if that’s not enough, the organizer of the winning party will receive some cool Ustream prizes.

The categories are:

  • Loudest and proudest for Obama
  • Loudest and proudest for Romney
  • Party with the best costumes/outfits
  • Best animal mascot
  • Editor’s Pick (we pick this winner in house)

If you want to win, you’ll have to do a bit of campaigning. Get people to tweet to @Ustream with the hashtag #UstreamContest, plus your Ustream user name (sign up here) and the category. For example: “Hey @Ustream, my vote goes to DemocracyRocks for best animal mascot. #UstreamContest”.

Without #UstreamContest we won’t be able to track the winners so don’t forget that part!

The party with the most votes in each category is crowned winner. We will tally them at the close of the debate, contact the winner and mail out the prizes. Winners have until Oct. 5 to respond and claim the prizes.

To register, fill out the form here or scroll to the bottom of this post. A Ustream rep will be in touch to confirm your party.

If you’ve never broadcast on Ustream, we have some useful information on how to get started. It’s easy, and you can use almost anything to broadcast – your smartphone, webcam or any higher-end video camera. For more information about broadcasting on Ustream please visit: ustream.zendesk.com or community.ustream.tv.

So, if you love politics, if you love Obama, if you love Romney, if you just love a party, go live on Oct. 3!

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. LIMITED TO US RESIDENTS. MUST BE 18 YEARS OR OLDER. LIMITED TO ONE CHANNEL OR ENTRY PER USER.

Broadcast for Friends: The Future of Social Broadcasting

Hey Ustream fans!

At a super charged event tonight we announced and demo’d our newest and coolest product, Broadcast for Friends for iPhone! Over 300 people got a sneak peak of the app tonight at our office in San Francisco, so I wanted to give all of you a preview, too!

Broadcast for Friends (or BFF for short) is a brand new app from Ustream that allows anyone with an iPhone to broadcast live video direct to their friends on Facebook. It’s so dead simple and easy to use, yet this is the first time our live streaming technology has been used like this, and as far as we know, no one else has done it like this, either.

Here’s how it works. Anyone can download Broadcast for Friends from the app store (click here to find out when we launch!). Once you load the app, you can connect directly to your Facebook account in order to start broadcasting. You don’t need a Ustream account to broadcast, and best of all, it’s absolutely free!

BFF not only has a high quality camera, we also have 10 Hollywood-inspired filters to make your video pop.  Favorites around the office are Maltese (film noir style) and Vendetta (graphic novel style).  We also have a “Curiosity” filter inspired by the recent expedition to Mars.

You can change filters by swiping or by selecting a filter on the bottom.  You can also choose your camera.  When you are ready to broadcast, it’s fast and easy.  We ask you how you want to share your broadcast first.  We have three options right now: Public, Friends, or Only Me.  Then you can go live.

Here’s the coolest thing about BFF:  As soon as you are live, you are live right on Facebook.  That means your friends will see your video in their news feeds, and you can find your videos right on your Facebook timeline.

As you know, Ustream has always been at the forefront of live video streaming technology, and BFF is no exception.  There’s a ton of engineering power behind this simple app that allows us to get live video streaming on 3G and WiFi to our servers and back to Facebook instantaneously.  The result is an experience that doesn’t exist anywhere else.  That’s right, we’re the only app that allows you to send live video right to your Facebook Timeline.

Here’s the best part:  When you are done broadcasting, your video is saved automatically on your Timeline so it can be viewed by any of your friends even if they missed the event.  Your videos can also be viewed from the app itself.

Check out this AWESOME VIDEO showing you how the app works, and don’t forget to sign up to find out when we go live!

Get excited: The Mars rover landing will be live on Ustream

With the Mars Rover scheduled to make its historic landing on the red planet on August 5, we’re in a total space frenzy. And thanks to our partnership with the space junkies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (that’s JPL for short) we’re excited to offer a series of live events, tweetups, and chats leading up to the big landing!

About the mission: The dune buggy-sized Curiosity has been in transit since it launched in November of 2011. Once it lands, it will be able to collect and record valuable information about the rocks and soil of Mars that could help us understand whether the atmosphere ever supported microbial life. Yes, this means we may finally be able to answer David Bowie’s age-old question: Is there life on Mars?

Be sure to RSVP for these events on the NASA JPL channel here: http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl.

Additionally, Ustream will be offering exclusive training and support to the winners to enhance their skills to become an All-Star Ustream citizen journalist. To be considered, send a video (less than 2 minutes) and reasons why you or someone you nominated should cover the convention then email it to offthebus@huffingtonpost.com.

“Citizen Journalism is increasingly democratizing the internet with live Ustream news events playing an important role,,” said Brad Hunstable, CEO and co-founder of Ustream. “Our partnership with Huffington Post will further push forward this trend and our mission to enable anyone, anywhere to share their stories. By combining Huffington Post’s world-class news reporting with Ustream’s live video citizen journalism viewers everywhere will now have a raw and unedited perspective of diverse voices on the world’s most important events.”
