Logitech Broadcaster Ustreamer Contest

Posted on by

Thanks to our friends at Logitech, we ran a contest to provide 10 Ustream broadcasters with Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcams.

We asked you to send us your cutest/most compelling/craziest videos and we were blown away by your responses. From baby ducks to living room concerts to superheroes running through the snow, you responded with some amazing video clips.

In the end, we selected Ustreamers who had great content and seemed like they would benefit from the increase in quality that the Logitech Broadcaster can provide. We want to see these Ustreamers in HD!

Hi, Alden from the Ustream Product team here!

We’re excited about the new user profile page that was released today.

Here’s an overview:

To see the difference, here’s what the old version looked like:

Here’s what the new version looks like:

To edit your profile page, log in to your Ustream account, point your browser to http://www.ustream.tv/dashboard and click on Profile Page under the Account section.

Pro broadcasters with extensions and iframe capability, can add customizations to this page by adding widgets and pulling in content from external URLs.

This is only the beginning. We plan to add additional functionality to this page in the near future and continuing to improve the Ustream experience.

We’d love to hear your feedback! Please leave your comments and questions at the end of the announcement in our community forum

Broadcast in Higher Quality!

Posted on by

We updated our broadcast console today to allow you to broadcast in even higher quality. Even from a standard webcam, you’ll see an improved picture quality at the same bitrates.

Before                                                                                                 After

Now here’s the geeky stuff….

Up until now, due to the limitations of Adobe’s Flash plugin, our web-based broadcast console was using the H.263 video compression codec, which was standard in previous versions of Flash.

Now with the release of Adobe Flash Player 11, broadcasts done via the Ustream web Broadcast Console will be encoded in H.264, which is a more advanced and better-looking codec.  We’re already  using H.264 in Producer and we’re excited to be able to offer this higher quality via your browser as well.

You can read all about it here in case you want to get really geeky.

In order to take advantage of this new development, you need to install the latest version of Flash.

If you have an older version of Flash, you can still broadcast, but it will be using H.263, so we recommend you upgrade as soon as possible to improve your broadcast quality.

Visit Ustream to try out the new and improved quality.

Happy streaming!

This Week in Product: New Channel Features – (Social Stream Moderators, mRSS and Video Player Auto-Resize).

Posted on by

Hi there!

Alden from the Ustream Product team here.

Broadcasters,  we’ve added three new features to help you control the experience on your channel. All three are live today:

I. Add Moderators to the Social Stream
II. Automatic Player Re-sizing
III. Video mRSS Feeds

I. Social Stream Moderators

Now your chat moderators are also your social stream moderators. In the “Chat and Videos Widget” settings in the Dashboard, you can add moderators.  If you’ve already added moderators for your IRC chat, these moderators now work for both your chat and your Social Stream.

Start typing a user name and it will auto-fill. Select a name and it will be added to the list.

Once you’ve added someone as a moderator, all they need to do is:

1. Go to your channel page at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/this-is-my-channel-name

2. Login to their Ustream account

3. Mouse over the messages in your Social Stream.

Upon mouseover, your moderator will see small text links that say “Ban” and “Delete” at the end of each message. Click these to ban a user or delete a message in the social stream. It’s a “silent ban,” so the user who typed the message will continue to see their messages appear, but the messages won’t be visible to anyone else.

II. Player Auto-Resize

Some broadcasters broadcast in 4:3 (squarish, old television aspect ratio) and other broadcasters use 16:9 (widescreen). About a year ago we switched our standard viewer to favor 16:9 widescreen broadcasts, because the majority of broadcasts are done in this aspect ratio.  However, there is still a lot of content being produced in 4:3, so this was resulting in a smaller player and black bars on the side.  We developed a new smarter player that detects the incoming broadcast and resizes accordingly.  The result?  No more black bars!

See the before and after below:

After:

Next, we’re working on a feature that will help call the animals to the pond when you’re watching. Release date TBD.

III. mRSS Feed for All Videos / Highlights

Using the URL http://www/ustream.tv/channel/[channelname]/videos.rss for Videos or http://www/ustream.tv/channel/[channelname]/highlights.rss, you can pull an mRSS feed of the videos and highlights, respectively, for a given channel. This can be used by broadcasters to create dynamic widgets based on their channels as well as implement Ustream videos on their website in a dynamic manner (similar to an API). The RSS feed contains the following data:
  • media:content – type, medium, duration, height, width
  • media:title
  • media:description
  • media:thumbnail
  • media:category
  • media:backLinks — This is the link back to the ustream video/highlight page
  • media:player – This is URL to the video page
  • media:embed — These are the embed parameters if you want to automatically generate a video player embed
  • media:price – This is the price of the video, only included if this is PPV or Subscription content

Well, that’s all for now. We’ve got a few more updates coming to the Social Stream that we’ll talk about later this week!

This Week in Product: A New User Dashboard

Posted on by

Hello there! I’m Alden from Ustream’s Product Team. We have revamped your Ustream dashboard to make it even easier for you to manage your Ustream channel, and I want to highlight a couple of features you may not be using yet:

Default Channel

  • If you have more than one channel, you can now choose a “default” channel.  Simply choose your desired channel the first time and now you can access all your important settings directly from the dashboard landing page.

Schedule Events

Recorded Videos

Off Air Settings

  • Did you know you can set one of your recorded videos to play automatically when your fans visit your Ustream page?  You can also set up a slideshow with messaging about your upcoming events.  You can set this up using the “Off Air Settings” menu.  Click here for step by step instructions to set this up.

Happy Ustreaming!

If you have any feedback on our new dashboard, we would love to hear from you. Please email us at feedback@ustream.tv!
