A Short RNC Anecdote

Posted on by

Yesterday, at 4:00 pm sharp, all non security personnel were forced out of the building. As we walked passed the cold faced Secret Service standing at the door I could hear the heavy pant of the K-9 Bomb Detection Dogs. Turned around for just a second, my eyes idly followed a large German Shepherd as he paced around the room and disappeared past a dozen men in black. What specifically those men in black did next I have no idea, my line of vision had been obstructed when the door shut behind me, however one thing was for sure…The rock gods of the republican party were arriving in two days and things for both the RNC and Ustream were about to get crazy.

With our first stream of the convention, join viewers from around the world and watch McCain address how the RNC will change because of Hurricane Gustav. [live stream]

Check back tomorrow for live coverage all day and all week. Five cameras, one convention, millions of viewers.

See you there.

Getting “Red”y at The RNC

Posted on by

Black suits, ear pieces, matching sun glasses, camo, guns, badges, road blocks, and red elaphants oh my. With the convention coming up fast on Monday, security is exponentially getting tighter and the peremeter getting larger. The Xcel Energy Center is buzzing with a mix of Secret Service, Press, and two Ustream employees – all of whom are giving 200% to ensure perfection.

For the past three days Brad and I have been setting up streams for the Republican National Convention. The quality is, like all of our streams, amazing. For the first time ever, you will be able to watch the RNC from the comfort of your computer chair. It’s amazing that we live in an age where live premium content is delivered directly to our work, school, or home computer. Ustream allows us to stay informed in real time, and more importantly, share that experience with millions around the world.

Pictured below are Brad and I, standing in front of the main stage, ready to bring you into the RNC with Ustream.

As I finish this update, I notice I’m typing in synch with the loud throbbing military helicopters that are constantly keeping watch a hundred feet above me.

Live video by Ustream

The Election Season is ON!  As we enter the final months of the 2008 Election, Ustream.tv continues to lead the way in providing open, live visibility of our nation’s tremendous electoral process.

We are proud to sponsor the Big Tent In Denver project LIVE from the Democratic National Convention.  So what’s it all about? Ustream will provide LIVE coverage from August 25th-28th and you’ll have a front row seat.

“Hosted by Daily Kos, ProgressNow, and The Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, the Big Tent will be the place to be for new media journalists, bloggers, and non-profit leaders covering the Democratic National Convention. The Alliance for Sustainable Colorado has graciously given their building, parking lot, and untold hours of staff time to make this event a reality for the mass of bloggers descending upon Denver.  The Alliance Center is one of only two double-LEED certified buildings in the world and 27 non-profit organizations currently call it home. They represent a range of educational and advocacy interests — social justice, environmental protection, consumer awareness, public health, and cultural diversity.

In addition to resources like WiFi, podcast areas, Fat Tire beer, food, and much more for the registered bloggers, the Big Tent has a Digg Stage featuring national leaders and speakers like Van Jones, T. Boone Pickens, Carl Pope, Majora Carter, James Rucker, Donna Edwards, Donna Brazille, John Conyers, and our very own Markos Moulitsas.”

Also, check out the LIVE Construction underway on the Big Tent in Denver

The following week (Sept 1st-4th), Ustream.TV will be the official and exclusive live streaming provider of the Republican National Convention from Minneapolis/St. Paul. Be sure to tune in for live gavel to gavel coverage all week!

New Feature: New Menu Button!

Click the “Menu” button in the Vide Player.  You’ll see we’ve upgraded it.

In the new Menu, users will now be able to:

  • Retrieve the URL and embed code for the show or recorded video
  • Share the show or video on Twitter, Digg, Stumbleupon, or Facebook
  • Report an abuse
  • Follow the Ustreamer
  • Easily navigate back to the show or video page on Ustream via a “Go to Show Page” button

In addition, we’ve added thumbnails for Live Shows so users can easily see what other shows are live on Ustream at that moment.  There is also a search bar that allows users to search the Ustream site directly from the video player.  Pretty cool, huh?

We hope you enjoy it.  Be sure to look out for more new features in the next few weeks!

New Feature: My Followers!

Posted on by

My Followers is the complement feature to My Feeds. Whereas My Feeds allowed you to manage the Ustreamers you are Following, My Followers allows you to manage the Ustreamers who are Following you.

Bulletin

With My Followers, you can send out Bulletins to all of your Followers at once. In addition, you can instantly send your Bulletins to Twitter. Pretty cool, huh?

Privacy

In the Privacy tab, you can set what notification items get sent out to your Followers.

Manage

In Manage, you can Direct Message your Followers individually or choose to “Block” a user. Blocking means that even though the user has chosen to Follow you, he will not receive any of your notifications or see any of your recent activity.

Rhett and Link: Timeless Humor

Posted on by

Over the last year, I’ve had the honor to work with two of the funniest guys I have ever met.  Some may call them creative.  Some may say they’re wacky.  I just say they are H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S.

Rhett and Link have made many of us on Ustream nearly pee in our pants during their live broadcasts every Thursday night at 9pm EDT / 6pm PDT. They exposed us to a small town in North Cacalackin (North Carolina if you don’t speak Link) called Lillington.  I’ve seen a Senator on their show, a TV Host, American Idol stars, scary Hawks, songs about the dangers of fireworks, lessons in Goth, Rhett running on a treadmill, crazy community exercises, and Link making Guacamole.  Where would you see this on TV!

This last episode of Rhett and Link is another classic in “INTERTAINMENT” as they coined it.  Join Rhett and Link every week right here at Ustream.TV and their website www.rhettandlink.com

Post your favorite R&L moment below!

New Feature: My Feeds!

Posted on by

The release of “My Feeds” marks the beginning of the second phase of Ustream’s site revamp.  The first phase was our new look.  The second phase is revamping our social networking infrastructure — basically how relationships are formed and managed on the site.  “Friends” and “Watchlist” have been retired, in favor of “Followers/Following” and “My Feeds.”  We think Followers/Follwing is a better way to characterize the relationships being formed within the community and captures the dynamic nature of Ustream more accurately than Friend relationships.

What’s Changed?

None of your Friends relationships or Watchlists have been lost.  Watchlists and Friends have both been migrated over to My Feeds.  Watchlist items have been turned into Ustreamers you’re Following in “My Feeds” and Friend relationships have been turned into reciprocal Follower/Following relationships.

How Does it Work?

Following a user on Ustream means you are electing to receive notifications about that user’s Ustream activities — when he starts a broadcast, records a video, creates an event, or starts Following another user.  You can “Follow” a user by going to his show page or profile page and clicking the “Follow” button.  After doing so, the user will start appearing in your “My Feeds” page.

You can see all the Ustreamers and Events you’re Following by going to your “My Feeds” page.  Your “My Feeds” page also displays recent activity from each of the Ustreamers you are Following.  Furthermore, on your “My Feeds” page, you can “Set Feed Preferences,” which allows you to specify what notifications you want to receive.  Currently, you can specify which notifications you would like sent to your Ustream Message Box.  In the future, however, you will also be able to set notification settings for email, IM, SMS, so be sure to look out for that!

Be sure to send us feedback about MyFeeds.  We’re always interested in hearing from users.  Please send all Product Feedback to support@ustream.tv
