Iowa Meets New Media: Candidates, Bloggers Go Live On Ustream.TV

iowa5.jpgLast night was one of the most active political nights I have ever seen on Ustream to date. The results of Iowa Caucuses came in throughout world of new media last night, and Ustream was no exception.

Probably the most interesting live stream was by the Politico.com, a political organization started in early 2007. James Kotecki, a video blogger who does Politico’s PlaybookTV videos, gave great play by play coverage from Iowa Caucus Media Center as the results came in. It was a simple setup: laptop, EVDO card, built in webcam and Ustream by a guy who had opinions and understands the dynamics. This is New Media at its finest.

Two major Republican candidates streamed their post Iowa Caucus press conferences live on Ustream. Republican Senator John McCain was the first of the evening streaming live from New Hampshire to his supporters in Iowa and across the country.

Watch the full video here: McCain Iowa Caucus Speech.

Republican Governor Mitt Romney streamed his post Iowa speech live on Ustream as well. Gov. Romney placed second in the Iowa Caucus telling supporters they got the silver, but will get the gold in New Hampshire.

The next major caucus night is New Hampshire and we expect another great, interactive night!

Yeah, and I was there, too, live streaming from inside an actual caucusing precinct for the Huffington Post, with about 280 viewers and a lively chatroom, which you might have known if you EVER READ the mail you get from the Contact page. Or maybe it’s just the lack of a usable screen capture image, brought about by some Ustream glitch that seems to have vaporized my recording of the two hour political event (leaving only two little fragments less than a second long on My Videos page). The hour I recorded at the media center in the convention complex also seems to be mostly gone — the recording that actually has the name and description I entered before saving is of dead silences and some illegible white blob, and the recognizable footage auto-saved under “Broken Record” (WTF is that? who titled that?) is only a few minutes long and doesn’t scroll right.

If it’s unrecoverable and I’m screwed, fine, but when I’m pleading with you on your Contact page to let me know if there’s any way to recover the video footage that was written about at Wired.com and I’ve got CNN and AJC asking about, and I TELL you all this, I would at least like the respect of a response telling me I’m screwed. Is that too much to ask? There is definitely something very wrong with your recording function, and it’d just be nice to know if you’re doing anything to address that.

The recording of the caucus was started around 5:50pm CST on January 3rd on the account “shelbinator.” If there is any way to try to recover that footage, I’d love to share it far and wide with the poli-tech blogosphere and sing Ustream’s praises. If there isn’t, please just TELL ME.

  2. Shelbinator,

I’m not sure what occurred with your videos and we are looking into it now.

I will be emailing you directly.
